After 22 years of being the face of breaking news and Saturday mornings, Peter Alexander is officially hanging up his NBC News mic, and the reason hits home for anyone balancing a career and family. The beloved anchor dropped the bombshell during the March 28, 2026, broadcast of Saturday TODAY, leaving viewers both emotional and curious about his sudden departure.

For nearly a decade, Peter has been living a grueling “double life,” commuting weekly from his home in Washington, D.C., to the studio in New York. He revealed a heartbreaking statistic: he has missed over 220 Friday nights with his family in the last seven years. With his daughters, Ava and Emma, entering their pre-teen years, Peter decided it was time to choose “presence over prestige” before that window of childhood closes forever.

While he called the Saturday TODAY desk his “happy place,” the veteran journalist admitted he’s ready to challenge himself with something new. But don’t worry—he isn’t disappearing from your screens entirely. In a move that keeps him in the news cycle but closer to home, Peter is reportedly heading to the newly rebranded MS NOW (formerly MSNBC).

The shift to a weekday anchoring slot at 11 a.m. ET is a strategic power move. It allows him to maintain his status as a heavy hitter in national reporting while finally being home in D.C. for dinner and school events. It’s a major win for work-life balance in an industry known for burning people out.

NBC hasn’t named a permanent successor for his seat next to Laura Jarrett yet, opting for a rotating cast of anchors for now. As Peter prepares for his new weekday chapter, the outpouring of love from colleagues like Savannah Guthrie and Kristen Welker proves he’s leaving a massive void at 30 Rock.

The era of the “weekend warrior” is over for Peter Alexander, but his new journey is just beginning.
